Well, yes...we just went thru this and the TV is now back in box for pickup from Amazon. We do not have a smartphone either but we have 2 iMac computers with Google access of course, but that was insufficient, sadly. We spent 4+ hours yesterday trying to get it to work, including Sony tech support call (worthless, sadly. We hooked it it up, connected to antenna (like all of our other TV's). We do not have Comcast or Direct TV etc. We also have 2 iMacs both connected to internet (with Google accesss/account) of course. We setup a separate Google gmail account, with appropriate settings / passwords, but when it came time to getting the required Verification Code, it would not go. Ever. We tried setting up a new separate gmail account but still no go. I am a graphic artist (advertising business owner) who've worked on Macs since 1964 so not tech challenged but this stumped us. We followed instructions to the letter, we thought, but still when TV would not release the requried "Verification Code" to the g-mail account we'd set up via Google, per intructions, we were stymied. Later we realized it must be that we had to have an iPhone to receive the verification code...it would send it to our gmail or my iMac (sitting nearby above our working router). We thought we might have issues with the router but it worked fine, was connected etc. We are seniors, yes...but not stupid(??) or were we? Rethinking everything leads us to believe that the key "verification" code linking TV to facilitate the google streaming capability had to be sent to a smart phone ot tablet. we have neither. We have an eBay biz we manage on my iMac - along with emails, etc. but no "smart' phones. We also have an older (dumb?) Sony Bravia that works great - just fine. We may just be technicalaly challenged (and unsmart?)...and the bigger Bravia 55 did have a gorgeous image and great sound...but we'll be fine. Good Luck and pardon our ignorance. I just wish someone would have ex-plained that the set-up to access all streaming features required you to have a smart phone. Thx / All the best. Charlie and Barbara / Memphis area
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.A mobile phone or tablet is recommended but optional. You can set up Chromecast with Google TV even without a smartphone. Take a look at the following link for the complete setup requirements and guide on how to setup: https://support.google.com/chromecast/answer/10109990
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. You do not - no external device is required. This device basically turns any TV into a smart TV. You can download apps from the Google store onto your TV.
