Do these actually work at 35 miles null

Only if you're on flat land without any obstacles in between you. If you have Hills or buildings between you your range will be greatly reduced.

Maybe if you were on top of the Empire State Building communicating with someone in another clear area. While they may claim 35 you would need to choose a different much more expensive radio for that. Now for what you would really be using it for such as between two boats or while hiking or fishing with the distance between you and a friend within seeing each other distance you would have a great product.
