"Your mileage may vary"--- Walkie-talkie to walkie-talkie with stock antennas, in most environments, you will be lucky to get over 1 mile, unless one of you is on a mountaintop or you are talking across water, then who knows how far they will go? At 5 Watts on VHF frequencies, with very good well tuned mast mounted antennas, you should be able to get 10 miles or more. With marine transceivers running 25 Watts or more, properly connected to good well tuned mast mounted antennas you should be able to talk 20 to 50 miles. Just remember, your mileage will vary. In other words, that question can't really be answered, only proven in the field.
