This filter housing can be installed on it's own. In my case, we have a well. I have this as a whole house filter, followed by a soft water system. The soft water system is manufactured by a totally different company. On a side note, I've tried filters in this housing by several different manufacturers. In the end, you'll have to decide which filter you prefer.
