You can use a heavy extension cord to power your surge protector and backup power supply. I leave mine plugged in all the time.

We recommend this always being connected to utility power so the battery can be used when there is a power outage. We also do not recommend connecting this to any type of extension cord or adapter as that does void the warranty of the UPS. Great questions!
