“The power cord on my battery back up system is 5 feet long, would it be safe to plug it into a heavy duty extension cord to better reach the electrical outlet? My home is older and the outlets aren't spaced as close as more modern homes.”

As long as you match said extension cord to the same gauge wire that is used on the device (standard electrical practice). Most electrical cords at your "box" and home improvement stores are 14ga. Please note, just because it says "heavy duty" that does not mean that it is a large diameter gauge of wire inside! The manufacturer may be describing the rubber/plastic coating and connectors of their extension cord and not the cords ability to handle a high load of electricity. So, in short, if any of this is confusing or foreign to you, I highly recommend that you do not use in conjunction with an extension cord.
