Unit is designed for vertical placement so outlets are easily accessible. Keyholes are for vertical orientation on wall.

It is best in practice to have the unit laying horizontally or mounted to reduce the risk of it being knocked over. The orientation of the unit is fine in any configuration as the batteries are sealed.

There's no reason why it wouldn't work either way. I it really is easy to use.
