In simple terms the NVMe is pretty much a drive that connects straight into the motherboard same as your PCI wifi adapter or a graphics card would. Where regular solid state drives use a power cable and a SATA/IDE connector for data transfer. In my opinion, the benefits are very insignificant for an average user

The largest difference between the two are that one uses the PCIe slot to connect to the PC while the other uses a sata port. Other differences may include performance.
