“The specs say this computer comes with 16Gb of 3 GHz ram, has four memory slots, and will support up to 128gb. How many slots are taken by the factory 16 gb? Are there any open slots, or will any expansion of RAM mean replacing existing ddr modules?”

Most computers with 16GB memory use either 1 16GB RAM stick, or 2 8GB RAM sticks. The specifications on the Best Buy website doesn't say how many sticks there are at default, so I say you should assume 2 8GB RAM sticks.
