Motherboard type may vary, but I own one of these and mine is compatible with M.2 SSDs. Mine has 2 slots for an M.2 SSD. I was in a similar spot as you, and just added the Samsung 970 EVO 1TB M.2 NVME SSD, and it works like a charm.

As long as the motherboard has an M.2 slot, you should be able to use that to install the SSD that requires an M.2 and not a SATAIII port.
