“Do these speakers need to have some kind of roof over them, or can they be mounted on a wall just exposed to the elements?”

The enclosure is fully sealed but the speaker terminal connection is exposed so it may corrode over time and because of this the manufacture has it listed as "Moisture Resistant". It is not recommended to have it fully exposed.
