The installation manual recommends that you do NOT use a roller but rather use several light coats of spray paint.

The covers do have small holes to allow sound to pass through, so you may want to use a roller and cover lightly with several applications to make sure you don't clog up the holes. You'll still hear sound, but it won't be as clear as if you allow the sound to permeate the covers.
