“I'm trying to add 2 monitors to this new laptop. One has a VGA with a HDMI adapter. It works. But since there is only one HDMI port, I got a 3.0 USB to HDMI/VGA adapter. It says it is not compatible. Anyone have any suggestions?”

We don't recommend connecting monitor via VGA connector.
