“In a 7.2.4 setting can i attach the preouts of the left front, right front, and center speaker to an external amplifier and use the avr's internal amp to power the remaining speakers. If so, are there any internal settings that need adjusting. thanks”

Yes. This is an 11 channel set-up (7 plus 4 atmos). The X3700H only has 9 amps, so you have to use an external amp for the other 2 channels. I'm using my X3700H in a 5.2.4 set-up, with an external 5 channel power amp. I use the power amp for the front three speakers (LCR). The power amp is connected to the X3700H using RCA connectors; one connector for each amplifier channel.
