John, this unit would do just fine in place of a sound bar. It has two optical in ports for digital audio input from TV or other device. It also has a subwoofer out so you can connect any sub you like. As far having better or worse sound quality than Bose, that would be a matter of your opinion and preference. For me, a clean, clear sound is what I like. I like detail and clarity. A super bass heavy sound that shakes my internal organs is not my forte. You may be totally different. Also, I haven't tried the antennas yet. Sorry I couldn't help with that one. Although, I believe most of the time the quality of the AM/FM antenna reception will depend more on their placement than on the system.
