Direct drive has the motor mounted directly to the platter that spins. belt drive has a belt that goes from the motor to the patter to make it spin. Direct drive tends to add a rumble to the recording were a belt drive is quieter. Direct drive is mostly for DJ's.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Belt drive is lighter and supposedly does not cause physical "rumble" in the 'table which might induce vibration problems. I have both Direct Drive and Belt Drive tables and both are excellent. An advantage of Direct Drive is speed control but there are a few belt drive turntables that provide the same adjustment for speed that DD tables have but I have not yet experienced any such difficulty with my three belt drive players.
