“I am trying to get sound from my DVD/blue ray. I have the sound bar connected to the cable box via digital optical. The DVD ONLY has an HDMI cable. When this is connected to the TV, I only get sound from the TV. no sound/pic when connected to SB!”

You might try disabling your TV speakers. I find using the sound bar on my DVP works better with the TV speakers "off".
