I think for heavier use I would probably try to upgrade to a Samsung galaxy tablet or inexpensive chromebook. You can often get a good sale price on both of these or buy a open box or refurbished. I think one of those choices would be more responsive and better for your situation. It may depend on the age of your child and the type of processes they need to do for school. I'm not an expert - just giving my opinion. If you are unsure I would ask a best buy tech dept employee. If you let them know what it will be used for and your budget they can probably make a good recommendation for what will serve your needs.
