“How is this better than just using your phone for control. other than not having it ring while flying? I have never flown at all but dont want to go to far overboard in price unless it will really make a big difference in control or ease of photography.”

It's MUCH brighter than any phone or tablet, so you can see your screen better on bright days in direct sunlight. It also has HDMI video port which allows you to use a set of HDMI goggles or backup monitor for redundancy.
