It can be used as a stand alone unit. However, you will need to order a tee adapter in order to get the right harness for power. The harness that comes with it doesn’t have the power connectors. I had to order mine thru crutchfield. The part number is Firstech FT-HRN-X1-OBD. I can verify this because I just had this unit installed on my Polaris Slingshot and is working well.
