they are essentially the same exact vacuums, but the 3+ comes with special tools for pet grooming tool, and hard to reach tools. all of these accessories you can buy after purchasing the vacuum (I've found ebay, amazon or independent sites are the best $$) - I've never wanted nor needed to use a vacuum to groom my dog (he would not appreciate that!) and the hard to reach crevice is nice but not exactly necessary for household areas (more appropriate for car vacuuming/shop vac type situations)
