“Hi, I purchased the Dyson HPO4 because previous posts by a Dyson Representative State it can be used as an air purifier without the heater on. However, I cannot figure out how to do this and when I called Dyson, they are telling me the heater is needed.”

Hello CC, this is Kelly with Dyson. I'm sorry for any misinformation that might have been given to you regarding the Dyson HP04. The machine does need to be on, in either heat or cool mode, to have the air purified. Best wishes, Kelly Dyson Customer Support
