You can specify and control how much humidity you desire. The tank is easily removed and filled with tap water by pressing two release tabs and sliding it out. It has a convenient carrying handle. Just be sure the outside is dry before sliding it back into its position. You do not need to do anything with the water tank on a daily basis only refill when empty. Depending upon the hardness of the water in your area, minerals will build up in the humidity system. Dyson provides citric acid for you to use in the deep cleaning of the unit. And don't panic, the citric acid is not hazardous but you need to be careful with it.

While you cannot turn off purification, you can turn off humidification and put the machine in backwards airflow mode, if you do not want cooler air blowing at you. The machine also features a Deep Clean cycle for cleaning. How often the tank needs to be refilled, will vary depending on how dry your environment is and how humid you have the machine set to.
