set it on auto it will shut off when temp. is reached

Yes once it gets to a certain heated temp it shuts off. Very convenient, so it wont just waste energy

It's heating feature will heat the room to a certain temperature, and then goes into a standby mode where it is still running and purifying the air, but just at a lower rate, you can also shut this feature off and have it shut down completely when it is done heating the room.

It sounds like you might think this cools as in to bring down the temperature. The fan pushes the air but doesn't cool it. 
Yes the fan can be set to on and will retain its speed until you change it. The option to set a temperature is in the heat mode.

Hi there. Thank you for your interest in the Dyson Pure Hot + Cool Link. When using the purifier as a fan, in fan mode and not in auto mode, it will continuously provide cool air.
