Yes it has an auto air quality that you can set to one of three levels. It's very easy to adjust from the app. I'm at work and can adjust everything. Attached is a photo of air quality settings and a shot of where it detected when i was cooking last night.

However, the machine does need to be on, at least in airflow speed of 1, to be purifying the air. Air will get drawn in at the bottom of the machine, purified through the filter and then expelled through the aperture at the top. Best wishes, Kelly Dyson Customer Support
