I had the same problem. This trick fixed it perfectly:- 

Unplug the charger from the wall. Plug it in again. Attach your Dyson and press the trigger (on button) for around 20 seconds (nothing will happen, just keep it pressed).

My Dyson worked perfectly again straight away after doing this.

I bought a floor model about 2 months ago...I'm sure it didn't get much use, but after using it since I brought it home, it won't hold a charge. It will work for about 2 minutes, then has to charge again. Not impressed with this brand of vacuum.

I have the same problem, I charge the battery but then when I turn it on it only works for about 20 seconds or so. I tried the fix suggested of holding the trigger in whist connected to the charger but didn't work for me. This is the second battery now, don't think I'll be buying another dyson!

My Dyson V6 is 3 years old, but is not my main hoover, so has had little use. It would not charge this week. I went through the Dyson website troubleshooter & it said I needed a new charger. I then googled the problem & someone suggested a new battery. My husband has removed the original battery & cleaned the contacts & woo hoo it is working fine. So may be worth trying before parting with any money.

 Having the same problem myself. Works for afew minutes then stops. I have found that if you put it back on the charging station for about 30 seconds then take it off again, it seems fully charged. Hope this works for you.

Thank you Bexy! I watched several videos on youtube, which prompted me to take the vacuum apart and clean it thoroughly (which I recommend you do once in a while anyway). I even ordered new filters and all of that solved a pulsing problem, but I was then faced with the "not holding a charge" issue. I looked for more videos, checked the Dyson website, etc. to no avail. I was super close to buying a new battery, but I tried the first approach from Bexy- unplug with vacuum out. Plug back in. Replace vacuum. Hold down the "go/ vacuum/start" button for 20 seconds. And ALL CLEAR! Dyson should put these troubleshooting tips on their website.

I have had the same problem and mangaed it fix in COMPLETELY by cleaning thoroughly. Watch a YOUTUBE clip on how to do this. Everythung was clogged up especially inside the filter.

Oh I LOVE my Dyson but suddenly it would only go for about 10 seconds and then stop no matter what I did with the battery. I tried Bexy’s trick Above: remove the Dyson from the charger, unplug the charger, plug it back in, replace the Dyson and hold the on off button while the vacuum is on the charger for 20 seconds. My dyson would only work for maybe 10 seconds then shut off... I think tried the solution of plugging in , unplugging, plugging in and holding the trigger for 20 seconds... that didn’t work for me. So then I pressed the MAX button and trigger to switch between modes and voila that worked. I was so close to buying a replacement battery for it. Glad I found this forum and solution first

It’s 100% the filters are clogged. They may look completely clean but they are not. I couldn’t even see any dust or anything on my D7. I have only had it less then a year. If you can put it in low mode and it works here is your fix. Go to YouTube and look up “how to clean Dyson filters” clean them let them dry for 24 hours and that should solve the problem. In the mean time once you remove both filters the Dyson should run on Max like it normally would but with out the filters. Hope this helps someone else out there

It was our docking system that wasn't bringing the power cable far enough into the vacuum properly. I think the spring is weak in the moving part. 
I Took the cable out of the wall mounted docking station and charged it. Works perfectly again.

Same thing after the warranty ended. It will run 30 seconds and then have to place it on the charger and it will work for a minute then quit and until I place it on the charger - No help from Dyson except the warranty is over - NEVER BUY A DYSON - built to last the warranty then a p.o.c - Amazed on how much they charge for their products but certainly not worth it.

Our V7 Animal had the "pulsing" problem. It would run for a second or two but shut off. New battery - no help. The blue charge light would illuminate for 1-2 seconds then extinguish so I thought it was the wall charger not charging the battery (old or new). 
After looking online and seeing a common resolution was cleaning, so I replaced the long cone filter in the head - still no help. Then happened to trigger it without that filter and it ran for 10-15 secs, well past when it would pulse before. Looked where the rotating head connects/enters the long tube was clogged. My wife thought I was a hero : )

I had the same problem. I would take it off the charger after fully charged, use it for a couple minutes, then it would stop. Then start running again for another minute or so and stop. I tried this procedure , unplugged the charger, plug it back in, attach sweeper in the charging dock, hold power button for 20 seconds to reset battery. It worked! Now runs good as new!

Your dyson hoover is more than likely on max mode. how to find out if its on max mode.. when you press the power button if it lights up blue around the max button, max mode is on so press the max button and the blue light should turn off from around the max button and your hoover should then hold its charge.

Had the same problem. Dyson would run for 20secs then stop; blinking battery lights. Then I realized the Turbo/Max Button was on all the time. Reset the button and back to normal operation. Silly I know but easily done and hopefully this will save someone a few £££s on a battery.

Thank you so much! I have a V11 (excellent) but like my V6+ for small jobs. I tried easiest tip, With the V6+ in the charging cradle, unplugged charger from power source, waited a minute and plug back in. It is like new.
Note, my charger is connected to extension cord which is plugged in to light socket. So turning switch on/off regardless of charging cycle may have confused the sensors.

Undo the 2 screws that hold the battery in place and us a cardboard nail file to lightly clean the male and female battery connections. Works a treat.

I am having the same problem!  I've replaced the battery once and it worked well for "a while."  No it only works for about 5 seconds at a time.  I've tried unplugging and replugging the charger, then depressing the trigger for 20-30 seconds.  Unlike the report (nothing happens), the vacuum activates for the "usual" 5 seconds.  I've not yet found an answer.  This is an expensive vacuum and I would expect better performance...even if it isn't used on a daily basis.

For me, it was the docking station - not making a complete connection. Needs to be given a "push" from the top to fully engage. The blue charging light will come on. I bought a replacement battery in error.

For those that said it only held charge for 30 seconds, double check if the “Max” button is pressed (it will have a blue circle around the button if its on. When the vacuum is on max the battery dies very quickly because its working harder.

I was given a Dyson V8 animal extra during covid and for the last year it hadn't held a charge. I empty it before it is full and clean every filter regularly. It lasts about 40seconds. 
How do l fix this?
Can l get a new Baxter? 
If so how long is that going to last? 
The rediculious thing is, this is only used for spot vacuuming as l have a vax that l do the whole house with.

You need to reset the battery by fully draining it. To do this, pull out plug from charger. Put vacuum in charger and press power button down for 20 sec. The charging bars should blink still. Put on max mode and vacuum until it dies. Repeat with charger still not plugged in until the vacuum no longer turns on. Plug in charger and fully charger. Battery should be reset.

This makes absolutely zero sense. But I did the thing someone suggested..unplug the charger. Replug. Attach the vacuum.  Hold the power button (while attached, does nothing) for 20 seconds.  And voila! It works again.  It’s crazy but saved me the cost of a new vacuum.

This happened to my and my mom's vacuum at roughly the same time. I purchased 3rd party batteries off of Amazon. Hers worked well, but mine didn't. The reviews are mixed online. I decided to purchase a new battery directly from Dyson. I installed it. Same issue which was frustrating. I did the 20 sec. reset as described in other answers and cleaned out every part of the vacuum with very hot water. Now everything works!!

Could be a plugged filter.  The instructions say to pull and rinse the filter every month.  We didn't do it for years.  But my "failing batter" would run with the filter out.

Bexy is spot on!!!! My Dyson Animal would work on normal mode, but as soon as I switched over to Max, it would die after 10 seconds. Used Bexy’s suggestion from a few years ago and it worked! I unplugged the charger, plugged it back in, put the vacuum back on the charger and held the “on” trigger for 20 seconds. It worked IMMEDIATELY after doing this. I was in awe since a few minutes before it seemed completely dead. Try this. It kept the charge and I was able to vacuum the whole downstairs with no issues.

I followed everyone's advise of unplugging and re plugging holding the button etc. DID NOT WORK for me. What worked was cleaning the brush area really good, dirt was clogged and once I cleaned that area it worked like new again. Saved money buying a new battery.

Check to make sure there isn't a clog in the head of the tube or the head. It signals a clog.

I have the same problem but it isn't a charging/battery life issue. The vac stops after about 30 sec and the blue light flashes, if I put it back in the charger for a few seconds it will continue to work for about 15 min until the battery is flat and the light turns yellow (occasionally I will do this twice). If I only use it in short bursts of 10 sec four or five times I can often avoid the problem. It may be a battery memory or temp sensor issue

I have an old Dyson that's lasted for years .another upright that didnt last long so I replaced that with another upright which I cant use as the pile on the carpet is too l8ng and it breaks my back trying to do one room so I bought the cordless one as it seems an easier option but it didnt last long

"Remove the Cleaner head from the Wand, and remove the Wand from the machine."

My Dyson would run off and on but would not hold the charge. However, when the purple filter was taken out of the machine, it would run, but that was not a solution.
I followed the above instructions on the Dyson site and found a wad of paper stuck in the wand (pink stick) of the machine. Machine is now working perfectly. I previously purchased a new battery thinking this was the problem - not -- wished I would have saved the battery. Cleaned the purple filter and though I found debris in the filter, this did not solve my problem. Hope this helps.

I had the same problem. My Dyson would work for a few minutes and then had to be re-charged. It turned out that when the MAXX button is depressed the battery will only last a couple of minutes. Then I discovered that when the MAXX button is not depressed my Dyson will last for a normal time. I was ready to get rid of it until I realized that was the problem. If you are having the same problem ensure that the MAXX option is not engaged.

My Dyson V7 Animal (which is great!) didn't seem to be holding charge and only seemed to work for 10 seconds before going on and off and then stopping. I tried some of the tactics here, then emptied the hoover although it didn't seem too near the MAX mark (but it was more full than I thought!). It now works perfectly again! Phew. I think this is a warning mechanism to prevent it from becoming too full. Maybe emptying the hoover of dust/dirt will work for you?
