I have picked up screws with this. So I am sure it will pick up pea sized rocks. I have an animal also and can tell you this thing has plenty of power. And with 2 speeds I use it all the time.

We have cats and dogs, and 3 little ones that bring lots of dirt and debris inside with them, and this vacuum has no issue picking up after them. As powerful on the tile floor as on the furniture.
