The non-replaceable 3V battery in the thermostat is a backup battery used to maintain settings or time during power loss. It’s not needed for normal operation when the thermostat is wired and powered through your HVAC system (via the C-wire or Power Extender Kit). So yes, you do not need to replace the whole unit when that battery dies, because the thermostat continues to function normally as long as it's connected to power.
