• It must be plugged in for it to charge the cup. The saucer is just transfering the power from the plug to the battery that is built into the cup.

• Hi Tex, thanks for reaching out! The charging coaster will need to be plugged-in, in order to charge the mug when it's empty or maintain the current battery percentage (when liquid is inside).
