Yes the exterior of the unit does get hot. You need a minimum of 5 inches between the unit and any cabinets or other appliances on the top, back and sides while the unit is in use.

The exterior does get warm and vents on the side and top. Our clearance is about five inches on top which seems just adequate especially when broiling.
