It really varies depending on the environment. Ink can dry out and a month or it can last a few months. Maintenance Cycles can clear out dried ink most of the time. But you don't have to let it dry out you can remove the cartridges from the printer put them in a ziplock bag. Remove as much air as possible and put them in the fridge. I've had any cartridges last for a year and a half doing this.
