“I ran out of my black ink and my friend who has the same printer as mine(Epson XP-446) has a black XP-288. My other cartridges are standard 288, Is it alright to mix the XP black with the other cartridges or should I buy all 4 same(all XP or reg 288) ?”

Usually I only buy the XL in black and use the standard size cartridges for the colored ink. It's your choice. If you print a lot in color then buy all XL cartridges, if you don't just buy the XL size in black ink.
