Hello. I've seen the message for updating the projector, and I am able to continue using the proyector while that is happening. Note that I mainly use an Amazon firestick rather than the projector apps. Still, while it is updating, I can switch inputs as normal and I just see a message stating "update in progress". Your situation doesn't seem normal. I would contact Epson's tech support if it is still under warranty.
