Hello red. The XP-4100 contains a permanent print head that needs to be charged with all colors for normal operation. A small amount of color ink is used to keep the print head charged, even when you're printing black text only. When the printer says a color ink cartridge is expanded, it would need to be replaced to continue using the printer. Regards, Kevin - The Epson Team.
