“Can you scan photos smaller than 4x6? I have several old pictures that are 4x4 or 2 1/2 x 4. Would these scan on this machine or would it require some type of flatbed scanner?”

We have used it to scan many different sizes and shapes. The width is limited to the size of the machine obviously, but as long as the one edge is square, flat, and clean, it works well. Doing the same sizes together is better, but it as long as the top edges are stacked straight, it will pull them correctly.
