“My bracelet accidentally got caught on that white part by the pickup rollers and tore it out. I was able to re-insert it and the scanner works but a spring fell out and I can't figure out where it goes. Where and how do I reinsert the spring?”

Apparently this is where the spring goes. Top center into that recess cavity and onto the little peg.

As the first answer says, the spring goes on the peg at the back of the white plastic piece to push it forward, but we also found that it is important that the black wire hanging form the grey plastic piece must go over the white piece, not under it, when you re-insert the white plastic piece
