• The software is loaded in the installation disc.

• There is a disc with the unit that has a very useful suite of software on it. Same stuff can also be downloaded from the Epson website. The USB driver for the unit exists in the OS (Windows that I used had it) and the scanner comes to life when you plug it in. However, for best operation, I would recommend installing the software first.
