“The scanner is pretty slow. It gives a message that it will work faster in another USB port and a diagram of USB ports that my computer does not have. The computer (desktop) is about 5 years old, and I'm using Windows 7. Is there anything I can do?”

Since it's a desktop, just buy an inexpensive USB interface board and plug it into your motherboard. (see https://www.bestbuy.com/site/searchpage.jsp?st=usb+pci+express+card&_dyncharset=UTF-8&id=pcat17071&type=page&sc=Global&cp=1&nrp=&sp=&qp=&list=n&af=true&iht=y&usc=All+Categories&ks=960&keys=keys) Some even have an extension cable that lets you bring the connection out to the front panel of the machine. Note that these USB 3.0 cards are backward compatible with USB 1.1 and 2.0, as well, and you'll then be up to date for all current hardware in the future.
