From what I understand, it can detect up to 1 mile ahead or behind you so as long an officer is checking the speed of someone else in front of you, it should be able to detect that. Also, if you are in a large city and there are several other Escort Live users ahead of you; it will ping you and let you know that someone else detected live Laser or Ka band radar. It knows you are getting close because of the GPS feature. I use Waze navigation app as a backup on long road trips because there are now millions of users who will mark the locations of police running radar or even being hidden in the area. Hopefully the Escort Live community builds up like Waze to prevent more tickets.
