No. I went downstairs in my house and left my phone upstairs to test this out. I didn't get the notification on my fitbit. I'm pretty sure you have to be at least in line of sight.

No, it needs to be connected to the phone via bluetooth. The bluetooth range is not very far.

It has to be within Bluetooth distance to communicate at all with your device.
