The box of the fit bit has a measuring chart that you can put your wrist up to in order to see what size you need. I think the small would only fit a small child's wrist properly. My wife is really petite and wears very small everything. Even for her we had to go with the normal size because the small size Fitbit HR was too small for her wrist. I think this is the first time we have ever had that issue with her.

The small is really child sized unless you always want it tight, which you shouldn't because Fitbit recommends having it loose enough that you can fit a finger underneath and move it up and down your wrist area.
