The fitbit itself cannot be used as a tracking device, not the Charge HR at least.

It is pretty dim but can be seen in the dark, I'd compare it to the average alarm clock light but smaller size. The buttons on the HR scroll one way through to show the tracker's information, but if he holds down the button it will start the sleep mode. As long as he doesn't do that he will be golden! Hope this helps!
