It works through accelerometers and possibly an altimeter. It counts steps while your arm is stationary as well as with normal arms wing (in case you're carrying a box or not swinging your arm for any reason). I'm sure there is an algorithm that reads certain movements like a slight up and down motion, or swinging motion, or back and forth motion. It would plot acceleration on an X Y graph and certain precalculated regions would correspond to steps or stairs.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.You enter your height, so know it basically knows how long your legs are. It will figure out how many steps you will need to take in a mile. One arm swing is a step. And thats how it works.
