It it is paired with a phone with GPS enabled it uses the phone GPS. If you have paired and used the phone gps, Versa will automatically set you stride distance. This in turn makes the step and distance data more accurate even when you leave your phone at home I will often connect my bluetooth head phones to the watch and play back mp4s directly from fitbit or use music service and leave my phone home when walking in my neighbourhood. The Xfinity WiFi is good enough for about eight blocks to keep Pandora running longer than I can6.
