It wants a card to bill for when it auto renews. It's free for the time frame that was listed/advertised - and then it becomes a reoccurring charge - therefore, they need something to bill it to. All you need to do is cancel before your last month and you will never be billed. Unlike some business with reoccuring charges, Apple is very good about sending you messages about cancelling so no one can ever claim it is a surprise. Also, this is how ALL free trials work, with every single company, whether we're talking Amazon Prime, HBO, Netflix or anything else that offers a free trail. If you don't have a Apple gift card or a credit card, you cannot use the deal at all.

The reason your card is charged the $1 is to verify the card number you’ve entered is legit. It’s more of a temporary hold than a charge. After your free trial the same card will be charged unless you cancel prior to the end of the trial.
