Hi there, based on the Frigidaire installation manual for the Frigidaire 1.7 Cu. Ft. Over-The-Range Microwave with Quick Start (Stainless Steel): It can do BOTH - it is convertible venting. The unit supports three installation ventilation modes: 1. External venting (ducted to the outside) - Air is exhausted through a duct system out of the home - This is the preferred setup for removing heat, smoke, and odors 2. Recirculating (non-ducted / internal exhaust) - Air is filtered through a charcoal filter - Then released back into the kitchen 3. Vertical or horizontal ducting options - Depending on the cabinet/wall setup, the exhaust can route: - out the top (vertical) - out the back (horizontal) - The microwave is shipped in a default configuration that can be converted - If not ducted to the outside, you must install the charcoal filter kit for recirculation mode Bottom line - The ventilation does not have only one mode. It is convertible. It can either be ducted to the outside or recirculate back into the kitchen, depending on installation. - Maico
