Not sure I fully understand the question but I can offer this: The display alternates between fridge and freezer temperatures - but it's only lit up for a brief period after you touch the display or open a door. And it only shows what you've set it to - not the actual temperature. So if you set a warm freezer to 0F it will display 0F even though it may take a few hours for the actual temperature to cool down to that point (so you can't monitor the actual temperature as it cools down). The internal fridge illumination comes in whenever you open a door.
