You could, but when the ice tray is full, my experience is the ice begins to melt. That said, it drains back into the supply basin and once the ice tray is no longer full the unit makes fresh ice. The only countertop unit I found that keeps ice frozen is about $500. Too rich for my blood :)

After each use, it is recommended that you remove all ice cubes, and drain the excess water.
