“What is required to convert this unit to an external venting unit? Does it need cabinet space above the unit or can it vent directly out the back to the outside?”

The Frigidaire tech has the above venting information backwards....the top vent is the 7" round duct and the rectangular vent is out the back,

Please try again later.This cooktop vent hood is convertible, as it can be vented straight through the back of the unit to the outside or it can be vented up through the cabinet above the unit. Venting pipe must be purchased separately. Rectangle venting (3"x 7") to past through the cabinets above the unit into the attic & through the roof. Venting out the back of this hood requires a 7" round vent pipe that passes through the wall behind the hood to the outside of the house. You will need to add a weather head cover to the outside to prevent rain and birds coming into the pipe. Venting kits are usually available from the store you are purchasing this vent hood.
