Hi CLouise! Thank you for reaching out. Yes, you can absolutely open just one refrigerator door at a time to grab an item from that specific side. Because this is a French door refrigerator, each of the two upper fresh food doors operates independently of the other. The door on the left side features a "mullion" (a flexible sealing flap) that automatically folds out of the way when you open the left door, and sits flush to seal the unit when both doors are closed.
